Some thoughts on… Shaking the System
The election was a decisive win. President Elect Trump shifted almost every county and demographic in his favor. Congratulations to his supporters.
Americans sent a clear message that they want to shake up a system that is not working for them on issues like immigration, identity and inflation. I sincerely hope the new administration will address the challenges faced by Americans, especially those living paycheck to paycheck.
My three takeaways are:
1. The integrity of the voting system was strong similar to 2016 and 2020. Despite concerns raised, there were no issues in voting this time or in previous years.
2. The American public exonerated Trump for his past actions. All legal cases against Trump will almost certainly go away. There will be no hearing on his actions to overturn the election on January 6, 2021 or to store classified documents outside the White House.
3. He ascends to the office with more power than any other President in recent memory. With majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives along with immunity provided to him by the Supreme Court, Trump has accountability to almost no part of the government system.
The country has voted to hand itself over to Trump, and with his power he can shake it up as he pleases. The upside is that he can implement change quickly and help those in need who voted him into power. The downside is that he may become a dictator accruing benefits to himself and those closest to him.
US democracy was built on a system of check and balances. One critical check to Trump’s power is our ability to vote again in two years and four years if the policies are not beneficial to us and the country. Fingers crossed, our ability to vote freely will remain.
Trump has a mandate to shake up the system. Let’s hope he doesn’t break it.
